Embedded CPU Projects

An embedded system is a computer system with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, often with real-time computing constraints.  It is embedded as part of a complete device often including hardware and mechanical parts.  Embedded systems control many devices in common use today.  Ninety-eight percent of all microprocessors are manufactured as components of embedded systems. For hobbyists the most cost effective and widely supported by open source software libraries are the Arduino and Raspberry Pi hybrid processor/controller boards. 

The Arduino microcontroller, with its large number of  digital and analog ports, is best suited for interfacing sensors, LEDS, and other electronic components.

The Raspberry Pi is truly a complete personal computer that incorporates standard multiple USB, HDMI video, audio, and camera connectors (in addition to a smaller number of basic analog and digital ports) on a small form-factor board.

This retro gaming table uses both a Raspberry Pi 3 (running the Retropie software libraries) connected to an Arduino Leonardo (keyboard/mouse functions used for the joystick and button controllers).


The major build parts consist of a $15 USD Ikea Lack side table and a recycled 15" Dell LCD monitor removed from its case.
